Best Things to do in Letchworth State Park
Enjoy the view of Genesee Arch Bridge
Spanning 963 feet long, the Genesee Arch Bridge saw its first train in December 2017. It was the third bridge and the replacement for the mighty iron Portage Bridge which was 142 years old. But, unfortunately, the first bridge made of wood and timber burnt down after 23 years.
Upper Falls Overlook
At approximately 70 feet, the Upper Falls boasts one of the most breathtaking views in the entire park. The Upper Falls overlook also offers a beautiful view of the Genesse Arch Bridge. In addition, you may get a peak at a crossing train if you are as lucky as we were.
Do you love seeing rainbows?
- Hiking Trail:
- From the south side of the Gorge Trail, Trailhead #1, the hike to the falls is just a short hike down the trail and stairs.
- From the Middle Falls parking area, it will be a short hike up to see the falls.
Middle Falls
Clearly the largest waterfall in Letchworth State Park, Middle Falls, is the most impressive waterfall in the park. Measuring up to 285 feet wide with a 107-foot drop, this waterfall is enveloped in a gorgeous mist. Our jaws dropped in awe when we saw the hot air balloon hovering over the fall.
Visit Lower Falls
Overall, we would say the lower falls did not have the mighty thrill of the Upper and Middle Falls, although we highly suggest taking the time to see them. The footbridge, which gives you a distant view of the falls, is AMAZING!
You can also see the falls up close via a walking path 1000 feet from the trailhead entrance. If you only have time for one or the other, we suggest going to the footbridge.
Hike to the Footbridge at Lower Falls
From the top of the stairs, there are 127 steps to the footbridge, and we loved every minute of it. As you wander over the footbridge, you will feel as if you have gone back into medieval times.
Ride in a Hot Air Balloon Ride
We were absolutely surprised by the hot air balloons floating over our heads. Seriously? What could be better than gazing at a waterfall while being surrounded by hot air balloons?
If you are as obsessed with hot air balloons as much as we are, then book a ride with Liberty Balloon Company. Liberty Balloon Company is a family-owned local business that offers year-round rides Monday – Saturday.
Hike to Inspiration Point
Unquestionably, Inspiration Point is one of the highlights of Letchworth State Park. From here, you can see views of Upper Falls and Middle Falls. We were able to park within a short walk to Inspiration Point, although you can also hike the Gorge Trail, Trail #1 if you would like to see more of the park.
Tour The Visitor Center
Voted One of America’s #1 State Parks
Stroll through The Humphrey Nature Center
The best part about visiting the nature center – you get to discover the plants, animals, and geology of the park. There are many interactive exhibits and a video for you to view. The visitors center is open year-round.
Wait, there is more! Outside you will find a bird observation station, a butterfly garden, and sustainable features such as a cistern for collecting rainwater. Perhaps, one of the best nature centers we have visited.
Explore the Autism Nature Trail
Filled with a unique interactive experience, the Autism Nature Trail (The ANT) is an ADA-compliant one-mile loop with eight sensory stations for individuals to engage within the outdoors. You will begin your adventure at the Trailhead Pavilion, next to the Humphrey Visitor Center.
The eight stations on the trail engage each individual’s processing senses using nature and natural materials. For visitors interested in exploring the eight sensory stations, visit the Activity Stations Page.

And last, what better way to see 5.5 miles of “The Grand Canyon of the East” than white water rafting? Adventure Calls Outfitters offers trips to individuals, youth groups, families, and children. Check out their website for more information.
Where to Stay
If you are looking for accommodations close to the park but don’t want to splurge on a fancy hotel, then we recommend the Microtel INN & Suites by Wyndham. We have also included other places that are centrally located near the park.
- Inside the Park: Cabins, Campsites, and the historic Glen Iris Inn
- Hotels: We chose the Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham in Warsaw, New York (about 8 miles). Our room was basic but clean, and the staff was excellent.
- Rental houses nearby: Airbnb has a variety of cabins and house rentals. With the beautiful fall foliage, we now understand why.
Where to Eat
- Inside the Park: Wander to Caroline’s at the Glen Iris Inn inside the park. Caroline’s is a dine-in restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
- Outside the Park: We love getting a taste of the local culture and found the Lumber Yard Restaurant in Perry, New York. It was about a 15-minute drive from the park.
